Greater Educational Opportunities Foundation’s Brian Beck Receives InfoWorld CTO 25 Award

Brian Beck recognized for excellence in implementing virtualization and innovative use of storage solutions from Scale Computing

The Greater Educational Opportunities Foundation (GEO Foundation), an organization setting precedence in public education, announces that its IT Director, Brian Beck, has been named by IDG’s InfoWorld as a winner of its InfoWorld CTO 25 Awards. Beck was awarded the prestigious honor for his excellence in implementing desktop virtualization and storage IT solutions to give more students PC access.

“The ability to be innovative and cost-effective was very evident in this year’s InfoWorld CTO 25 winning entries,” said Galen Gruman, Executive Editor/News and Features, InfoWorld. “These IT leaders reinvented untenable legacies, provided game-changing insight, and managed both their own teams and key organization stakeholders to make their businesses succeed through the use of technology. Our honorees did much more than implement technology well; they brought its use to a new level.”

“I am extremely honored to be chosen as one of the InfoWorld CTO 25 Award winners,” said Beck. “Through our research, we were lucky to have found Scale Computing and Citrix Solutions – they made our decision easy and helped us both exceed our IT goals and make implementation a very simple process.”

Through its deployment of storage solutions from Scale Computing and Citrix Systems, Inc. for its virtualization needs, GEO Foundation was able to solve the issues the organization was facing with data growth and system upgrades. Scale Computing provides highly scalable, modular and migrationless storage systems based on their Intelligent Clustered Storage™ (ICS) technology. Deployed on a commodity hardware platform, Scale storage clusters grow seamlessly from as little as 3 terabytes (TB) to more than 2.2 petabytes (PB), in increments as small as 1 TB at a time. This technology provided GEO with the storage it needed, at an entry-point price that was nearly 50 percent cheaper than the alternative solutions the organization had researched.

“We love it when our clients see superior performance coupled with cost savings by using our storage technology – it’s what drives our business,” said Jeff Ready, CEO and founder, Scale Computing. “We are excited for GEO Foundation’s Brian Beck and thrilled to see that he is being recognized for his innovative approach to maximizing GEO’s IT assets - he is extremely deserving of this award.”

GEO selected Citrix XenDesktop® and Citrix XenServer® to address concerns regarding costly desktop upgrades and expensive cooling requirements in the datacenter. These virtualization solutions from Citrix integrated easily into GEO’s existing infrastructure to deliver virtual desktops, enable thin clients, centralize computing functions and reduce the number of physical servers – all while providing top speed, performance and security for GEO’s academic computing needs.

“The GEO Foundation has clearly demonstrated how school systems can invest their technology budgets in smart, sustainable systems to deliver top-performing solutions to students, upgrade the entire data infrastructure and save precious IT funds,” said Tom Simmons, area vice president – US Public Sector, Citrix Systems, Inc. “We’re proud that our work with GEO and Scale contributed to a solution that directly translates into better technology for the students.”

By combining storage solutions from Scale and virtualization products from Citrix, the GEO Foundation immediately saw tangible results and cost-savings. In a little over one month, GEO was able to transition all of their storage onto Scale solutions, virtualize six existing servers and even retire five other servers – all at just one of GEOs charter schools. They have also been able to condense their data to a single backup repository on Scale storage. Overall, they have retired and/or repurposed 14 servers - resulting in more than $60,000 in savings in just one month.
