Scale Enables Oroville Hospital to Make Shift to Electronic Medical Records

Scale’s storage solution supports Oroville’s extreme data growth and long data retention requirements.

Scale Computing, a developer and manufacturer of intelligent, clustered storage solutions that are tailored to the needs of the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME), today announced that Oroville Hospital, an acute care facility specializing in a broad range of inpatient and outpatient medical services, has deployed Scale’s intelligent storage to move into the digital medical era.  Scale’s S-Series cluster has delivered the high availability and security necessary to enable Oroville to move to electronic health records and implement integrated patient imaging while saving the hospital thousands of dollars.

Founded in 1962, Oroville Hospital is dedicated to serving Oroville, CA and the surrounding foothill and valley communities with a full range of healthcare from prevention through treatment to wellness. Thehospital has grown from a modest community hospital supported by a small staff of dedicated doctors into a 153-bed acute care facility specializing in a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services.

Oroville Hospital was using a traditional iSCSI SAN storage solution - a server packed with numerous hard drives.  The hospital made the move to electronic health records while simultaneously implementing integrated patient imaging, which included scanned copies of medical charts and insurance cards, and DICOM images.  These massive files were governed by strict regulations such as HIPAA, which requires that the data be highly protected and highly available at all times.

To keep up with its ballooning storage needs, Oroville needed an intelligent storage system that required minimal capitalexpenditure.  After receiving a recommendation from a vendor and evaluating the management interface, Oroville Hospital selected Scale Computing’s S-Series storage offering.  Oroville deployed 3 S2 storage nodes with 6 TB usable capacity.

“Scale’s storage solution delivers the high availability and security necessary to prevent patient and hospital data loss and corruption, ultimately ensuring that we’re compliant with regulations,” said Zach Gonzales, database administrator, Oroville Hospital.  “The Scale cluster has delivered massive cost savings for Oroville.  We’ve saved thousands of dollars as a result of not purchasing a new SAN server.  Scale’s storage allows us to purchase the storage we need, as we need it.”

Scale’s storage solution supports Oroville’s extreme data growth and long data retention requirements.  Scale’s Intelligent Clustered Operating System™ (ICOS) ensures that the hospital meets HIPAA’s high availability and security regulations with data protection and redundant infrastructure.  Scale’s ICOS architecture also enables Oroville’s IT department to non-disruptively add new nodes at will, seamlessly increasing the capacity of the entire array.  “With Scale, we’ve found everything we were looking for in a storage solution, – regulatory compliant, scalable capacity, and reliable support – at a price that was much less than similar options,” said Gonzales.
