The 2026 Scale Computing™ Product Vision: Making the Edge Effortless

by Bill Morrow • Jun 09, 2026

|

At our recent Scale Computing Platform//2026™ Summit, one truth came across loud and clear: the edge is reshaping everyday life.

People don’t think about edge computing when they gas up their car, grab food at an airport, check out at a retail store, park in a garage, ride public transit, or order dinner from a quick-service restaurant. They just expect everything to work. Payments should be processed. Cameras should record. Inventory should be automatically updated. Kiosks should respond. And local applications should keep running, even when connectivity gets spotty.

To drive this point home, Scale Computing CEO Bill Morrow made a $100 bet with every person in the room that they had interacted with our technology on their journey to the event, before they ever sat down (spoiler alert: he kept his money).

The point wasn’t just to show how widely deployed Scale Computing solutions have become. Rather, it was to show how critical the edge has become to the way modern businesses operate.

At Scale Computing, we believe the next chapter of edge computing has to be simpler, more resilient, and more adaptable than what came before. The goal is straightforward: make the edge effortless.

The Edge Is Everywhere… And It’s Getting Harder to Run

For years, edge computing has been talked about as a future trend. That future is here. It’s in the back office of a retail store, the data closet of a manufacturing plant, the systems aboard a ship at sea, the applications supporting a restaurant kitchen, and the infrastructure powering franchise operations across thousands of sites.

As Scale Computing CPO Scott Loughmiller explained in his Future of Edge Computing presentation, edge computing comes down to a single, simple question: where do your applications need to run? If an application runs in the cloud, that’s the cloud. If it runs on a server under a desk, in a store, on a gateway, or in a regional data center, that’s the edge.

And the edge is hard.

Applications at the edge are hard to deploy and harder still to keep running. They’re hard to update, monitor, secure, and manage across hundreds or thousands of distributed locations. Many organizations are still stitching together infrastructure, networking, and security with different tools, different policies, and different failure points.

Now add in the realities facing IT leaders today: VMware® disruption has created cost pressure and urgency for many organizations. Hardware costs have been affected by the rapid growth of AI and data center demand. Customers want more flexibility, partners need more options, and distributed businesses need infrastructure that can support what they need today and whatever comes next.

As Bill noted, this is a crossroads moment. And Scale Computing is running toward it.

The shift happening right now in distributed IT is real and it's accelerating. The old model of a centralized cloud where everything routes back to headquarters just doesn't hold up when you need real-time decisions at the point of sale, when you're in the middle of the ocean on a container ship with spotty connectivity, or when AI workloads demand local processing that cloud round-trips simply can't support.

What's emerging is a hybrid architecture where cloud and edge work together. The cloud handles heavy analytics and model training. The edge handles immediate execution. It's not cloud versus edge. It's cloud plus edge. As Bill put it, "AI is ushering in more and more compute needs at the edge, demanding that we manage broadband in very unique and targeted ways. And it’s at that crossroads that we sit."

The Vision: One Platform. One Control Plane. No Customer Left Behind

Our product vision is built around a simple promise: one platform to deploy, run, and maintain any application, anywhere outside the cloud. Not a collection of point solutions haphazardly cobbled together. Not a different box for every use case. One unified platform that meets customers wherever they are.

That vision matters because no two customers look the same. Some are running a single node. Some are managing thousands of locations. Some want to self-manage everything. Others want a fully managed service. Many want something in between. Some are modernizing gradually. Others are rethinking their entire distributed IT architecture.

"Our goal is to make the edge effortless," as Bill put it in his “Redesigning The Architecture Of Everyday Life” opening keynote remarks. That's the north star for everything we're building.

The "unified edge" roadmap we shared at Scale Computing Platform//2026 isn't just a slide concept. It's the destination our entire engineering organization is working toward.

The platform has to meet customers where they are.

Today, we operate across four key technology solutions: SC//HyperCore™ virtualization suite, SC//Reliant™ Edge Computing as a Service, SC//AcuVigil™ managed network solutions, and SC//Connect™ secure SD-WAN solutions. Each technology solves an important piece of the distributed IT puzzle. Together, they create something much more powerful.

  • The SC//HyperCore platform brings the resilience, simplicity, and ease of use customers have come to expect from Scale Computing. It offers scale-out capacity, advanced data protection, a VM-centric architecture for traditional workloads and VMware migrations, support for mixed hardware generations, fleet-wide observability through SC//Fleet™ Manager edge orchestration software, and Kubernetes support.
  • SC//Reliant Edge Computing as a Service brings deep experience in massively distributed edge environments, especially where thousands of sites require nuanced, flexible, and centralized orchestration. It adds true two-node high availability, API-driven change management, native container support, hardware flexibility, and proven retail edge capabilities.
  • SC//AcuVigil managed network solutions extends the platform with managed network and security services, helping customers protect distributed environments and reduce their operational burden.
  • SC//Connect secure SD-WAN solutions adds the secure SD-WAN layer needed to connect the far edge, remote workers, branch locations, cloud infrastructure, and everything in between.

The result is a platform designed to bring compute, applications, networking, and security together under a single, unified control plane.

Or as Scale Computing CPO Scott Laughmiller put it, “one thousand sites should not feel like one thousand deployments. It should feel like one deployment with one thousand locations.”

As many of our customers understand, one of the biggest challenges in edge computing is repeatability. A single site may be manageable. Ten sites become harder. Hundreds or thousands introduce complexity that can overwhelm even the best IT teams.

The vision for SC//Platform edge solution is to make deployment consistent and predictable through infrastructure-as-code principles. Compute, applications, connectivity, and security policies can be declared in one place and pushed the same way every time.

Even for organizations with only a single site today, that approach creates a foundation for the future. For multi-site businesses, it becomes a way to reduce drift, eliminate manual configuration errors, and create a repeatable model for growth.

Purpose-Built for an Unknown Future

AI is accelerating the need for compute at the edge. Real-time decision-making, computer vision, automation, smart kitchens, connected stores, and data-intensive operational systems all require infrastructure that can process data closer to where it is created.

At the same time, no one can predict every workload they’ll need to deploy next year, or even next quarter. That’s why flexibility matters more than ever. A modern edge platform has to support traditional applications, distributed applications, network and security services, and future workloads that have not yet been imagined. Our product vision isn’t just about a collection of products. It’s a platform designed for how the world actually operates today: distributed, real-time, and always on.

That’s the future Scale Computing is building toward: One platform. One control plane. Compute, applications, networking, and security working together. Self-managed, co-managed, or fully managed. Built for one site, thousands of sites, and every “unicorn” in between.

The edge is already reshaping everyday life. Our mission is to make it effortless. Learn more about our solutions and product portfolio.
